History of the University Library

2022

  • On 1 August - just in time for its 50th birthday - the UB will put the web-based library management system Alma into operation.
This is part of a project that began in 2019 and will run until the end of 2023, funded by the Ministry of Science, in which 41 North Rhine-Westphalian university libraries, the ZBMed and the University Library Centre (hbz) in Cologne are replacing their previously used heterogeneous, outdated library systems with a standardised and future-proof system.
In order to be able to carry out the migration process, there will be service restrictions in the course of July.
For the UB, the change from the previous library management system Aleph and the company Ex Libris (introduced in February 2004) to the new web-based system Alma from the same manufacturer means a fundamental "update" that affects all processes and transactions in dealing with printed and electronic media (from acquisition and cataloguing, resource management, data for literature research in the catalogue, user data management to lending, etc.). Alma contains, among other things, an integrated linking system, which replaces the linking system SFX from the company Ex Libris, which has been in use at the UB since 2007.
  • The introduction of the new library management system Alma also made it necessary to renew the library's catalogue. The new research portal, which was released on 1 August, is technically completely new. However, a great deal of effort was made to make it visually and functionally similar to its predecessor so that it can be used without major changes and all familiar and proven functions can be found again quickly.
  • From 9 August, the Competence Centre for Writing will once again offer regular student writing advice at the UB Information Centre. This on-site service has been suspended due to the Corona situation.
  • From 25 July, the fire protection flaps in the UB on the entrance level and on levels 3 and 5 will be successively renovated.
  • In the wake of a change in the Infection Protection Act, the majority of the previously applicable corona protection measures are dropped at the beginning of April; only compliance with general hygienic measures and the wearing of medical masks is still recommended.
  • From 14 March, the library will extend its opening hours, which have been extremely reduced for two years now, to new "normal opening hours": Mondays to Fridays 7:30 a.m. to midnight, Saturdays and Sundays 9:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Associated with the new opening hours is the deployment of a security guard Monday to Friday 5:00 p.m. to midnight and Saturdays and Sundays 9:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. The security guard replaces the decades-old security guard. The security guard replaces the decades-long use of student assistants.

2021

  • From 6 December, the University Library will be open Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 19:00.
  • The renovation and refurbishment work on level 2 will be completed by the end of 2021.
  • From 4 October, proof of 3G compliance will be required to visit the library. Only those who have been vaccinated, recovered or tested negative will be allowed to enter the library.
  • In July, further construction work will begin: the exterior façade will receive a new coat of paint, the aging and repeatedly defective exterior blinds will be replaced, and the lifts will be refurbished.
  • From 8 June, the library's services will be extended again. The library will be open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and individual workstations and rooms will again be available for use on a very limited basis.
  • In May, the UB is recommending the use of an ORCID iD as a globally recognised personal identifier and is setting up an ORCID centre to provide support. The ORCID Centre will offer help and support with questions about the institution and the use of an ORDID iD in everyday academic life.
  • From 20 April, due to the high infection figures in the district of Paderborn ('Corona emergency brake'), the library will be open Mondays to Fridays from 10:00 to 17:00 only for borrowing and returning media. The use of workstations and rooms is not permitted.
  • In April, work will begin on renovating the lifts in the stairwell of the library building.
  • From 22 March, the library will be open Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 18:00. Individual workstations and rooms will be reopened for use on a very limited basis.
  • From 9 March, the library's open access holdings will be accessible again, and the - very time-consuming - arrangement for ordering and collection made in January due to corona will no longer apply.
  • From 4 March, 7 p.m. to 5 March, 7 a.m., the Writing Competence Centre and the University Library, together with other institutions of the University, are organising a 'Long Night of Writing (LaNa)' in purely digital form for the first time.
  • From 12 January, the library will only be open Monday to Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. for the collection of pre-ordered media and the return of media. It will no longer be permitted to enter the open access holdings, use workstations and rooms, research PCs, scanners, photocopiers, automatic pay stations or similar.
  • The Digital Collections of Paderborn University Library(digital.ub.uni-paderborn.de), a joint portal for the publication and presentation of open access publications and retro-digitised material, will receive a functional and visual update at the turn of the year 2020/2021.

2020

  • From 16 December, the use of workstations and rooms is no longer permitted.
  • The state-wide portal for the verification of open access content at universities in NRW (NOAH), which has been funded by the Ministry of Culture and Science (MKW) since August 2020 with an initial term of two years, will be accessible in a beta version(https://noah.nrw) from 21 December. Conceptually and technically, NOAH is based entirely on the digital collections of Paderborn University Library and the Visual Library (VL) software in the version developed for Paderborn University Library. It is hosted via the infrastructure scan to web hosted by hbz.
Since 19 December, the digital collections of Paderborn University Library have been integrated into the NOAH portal in such a way that all previous and future publications in the digital collections are also an integral part of the NOAH data corpus.
  • Open access publications ('born digital documents') published via the publication service of Paderborn University Library have been assigned a Uniform Resource Name (URN) since 2007 and a Digital Object Identifier (DOI) since 2016. Since 19 December, DOI registration has been carried out as part of the membership in the DOI Consortium NRW established by the hbz (via Data Cite). As before, the UB continues to act as the university's central DOI registration office.
  • After the University Archive was already relocated to Building I in 2018, the rest of the office space in Building J that was made available to the library in 2013 will be returned to the university administration at the beginning of November.
  • The University Library will again release individual workstations and rooms for use on a limited basis from 21 September.
  • Opening hours will be extended from 6 July to Mondays to Fridays, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Borrowing will also be possible again for users from outside the university.
  • Opening hours will be extended from 18 May to Mondays to Fridays, 9:00 to 15:00.
  • On 27 April, the UB may reopen for the purpose of returning literature and for members of the University to borrow literature. Opening hours will initially be limited to Mondays to Fridays, 10:00 to 14:00. Subsequently, the library's on-site services will change in short cycles until the end of the year against the background of the changing intensity of the spread of the coronavirus, successive corona protection decrees of the state of NRW and changing assessments of the danger situation and trade-offs between the protection of staff and the need to provide library services on-site for studying, teaching and research.
It is of great advantage that the UB has been pursuing an aggressive e-preferred strategy for many years and uses a large part of its acquisition funds for licensing databases as well as electronic journals and e-books. This offer is being further expanded, also supported by additional funding from the university and the state.
Training and advisory services that were previously only offered in the context of face-to-face events are, as far as possible, carried out in the form of video conferences.
  • Since April, the UB has been offering a digitisation service as part of its digital collections, in which user requests for the digitisation of copyright-free books that are in the holdings of Paderborn University Library or in the holdings of cooperating libraries are implemented.
  • The COVID-19 pandemic (also known as the Corona (virus) pandemic) is spreading rapidly in North Rhine-Westphalia. On 19 March, the UB is completely closed and inter-library loans are also suspended. For their protection, staff work to a greater extent in the emergency home office.
  • On 9 March 2020, building and rearrangement work begins on level 2. The level will be completely restructured, also by relocating some offices.

2019

  • From May to June, the floor in the locker area in the entrance area of the UB will be renewed.
  • On 1 April, the University Library will open eleven new individual study rooms on Level 2 in Building I. These can be used by authorised users of the UB who are members of the Paderborn University, are writing a doctoral dissertation or post-doctoral thesis and do not have their own workplace at the University, for a maximum period of 6 months.
  • From February to August, all sanitary facilities in the BI building of the University Library will be renovated.

2018

  • On 4 December, the UB will put a return machine for information media into operation. Here, users can return borrowed media on their own. Only information media that are provided and issued at the counter of the Local Lending Department (for example, interlibrary loans) must continue to be returned there. The automated book return is - after the introduction of the automatic checkout machines in 2008 and self-checkout terminals and self-collection area in August 2018 - another component of the overall concept of providing self-services, with which, among other things, the library's scarce staff resources are to be relieved of routine mechanical tasks in favour of advisory tasks and the like.
  • In September, extensive construction and rearrangement work on Level 4, which began in July, will be completed. The carpeting has been renewed and the media stocks have been rearranged - so that access to the new specialist library, Level 2 in Building I, can be easily located.
  • In August 2018, six new self-checkout terminals and a self-collection area will be put into operation. In the freely accessible self-pick-up area, users can pick up information media that they have previously reserved via the catalogue or ordered from the stacks. The media in the self-collection area are arranged according to call number.
Orders from other libraries (interlibrary loans) as well as orders for DVDs, CD-ROMs, special collections from the stacks, didactic materials, literature on microfiche and microfilm as well as media to be placed in reference books, etc. will continue to be processed via the local circulation desk.As before, padlocks (lockers) can also be borrowed there.
  • At the end of June, a new library area on Level 2 in Building I - accessible via Level 4 of the library - will be made available for use. From now on, the media collection 'English Studies/American Studies' will be located here.

2017

  • Since 6 December, University employees have been able to apply for their combined service/library card or library card via the IMT service portal. This innovation is the result of a long-term joint project between the Centre for Information and Media Technologies (IMT), Department 6 Information Technology Procedures of the Central Administration and the University Library. Whereas data required for service/library cards, among other things, was previously collected several times, careful data exchange now ensures a high degree of data synchronisation and up-to-dateness of the data.
  • In March 2017, the UB published a new version of the "Acquisition Guidelines for Information Media", in which authentication via Shibboleth and the UB's e-policy are also presented.
  • Since 2 August, the University's Writing Competence Centre has been offering student writing advice once a week (initially always on Wednesdays from 13:00 to 14:00) at the UB Information Centre.
  • On 17 May, the topping-out ceremony is held for Building I, in which the UB will receive a level to expand its user area, as well as office and user rooms and an air-conditioned stacks for the University Archives. The library use areas in the old library building BI and in the new building I are to be connected by a connecting corridor.
  • Since January, the UB has been issuing DOIs for all OA documents published via the UB's publication service.

2016

  • Since May 2016, the UB's web presence has been in the new corporate design of the Paderborn University.
  • On 3 March from 7:30 p.m. until 4 March at 7:30 a.m., the Writing Competence Centre and the University Library, supported by other institutions of the University, organise the first "Long Night of Writing" at Paderborn University in the rooms of the library.
  • In January, the UB puts a new catalogue into operation. It replaces the catalogue based on the Primo software that has been in use since 2012 and is a completely in-house development by the UB based on the open source software Elasticsearch.
  • Since January, the UB has been issuing CC licences for the OA documents published via the UB's publication service and DOIs for the "Official Notices" of Paderborn University.
  • Since 1976, catalogue records in German and Austrian libraries (as well as in libraries in German-speaking Switzerland) have been created according to the "Rules for Alphabetical Cataloguing" (RAK). As of 01.01.2016, this set of rules will be replaced by the "Resource Description and Access" (RDA) set of rules.

2015

  • In August, the Service Level Agreement between da|ra and the University Library of Paderborn will be signed. This prepares the function of the UB as a DOI issuing office for the Paderborn University.
  • In March, the migration of the integrated library system Aleph from version 20.2 to version 22 takes place.
  • The UB Paderborn scores again in the national comparison "Library Index". Once again it records excellent results in the two dimensions of efficiency and development; here it belongs to the TOP group of all university libraries in Germany. The very long opening hours of 107 hours per week contribute to the good positioning of Paderborn University Library. These are the sixth longest opening hours of all libraries participating in the BIX-WB. The BIX also positively evaluates the library's high proportion of expenditure on electronic media and services. 68.7% of its acquisition budget is invested in the acquisition and provision of electronic media, which is the fifth best value in Germany and the second best value in NRW. The intensive use of the library's electronic information media - databases, electronic journals and books, electronic seminar apparatus, etc. - has a positive effect on the BIX; here, with over 1.165 million accesses per year, it achieves the highest value of all North Rhine-Westphalian university libraries, and the third-best value in Germany.
This is the last time that the UB will participate in the BIX, as it will be discontinued afterwards.

2014

  • In December 2014, a cooperation project between the Archbishop's Academic Library (EAB), the University Library and the Chair of Early Modernism at Paderborn University will begin, in which the oldest and most outstanding part of the EAB's holdings, the Theodorian Library (Theodoriana), will be catalogued and digitised. This library was established in 1604 by Dietrich (Theodor) von Fürstenberg, Prince-Bishop of Paderborn (1585-1618), to support the teaching activities of the Jesuits in Paderborn. Ten years later it formed the basis of the first Westphalian university.
Work has begun on the most important part of the 'Theodoriana', the 402-volume book estate of Prince-Bishop Ferdinand von Fürstenberg (1661-1683) with a total of about 151,000 pages (see http://digital.ub.uni-paderborn.de/nav/classification/193167).
  • As of October, the catalogue enrichment procedure 'Catalogue Enrichment' - in which tables of contents of print media are digitised and made available via the union database and the local catalogue and prepared for a catalogue search - started in 2006 and will replace the previous system via the Visual Library.
  • Since the beginning of 2014, the "Amtliche Mitteilungen", the "Announcement Gazette" of Paderborn University, have been published exclusively in electronic form, made available as OA publications via the "Digital Collections of Paderborn University Library". The issues of the "Amtliche Mitteilungen" of the University and the University of Paderborn from 1972 to 2013, which have been digitised by the University Library, are also available via this portal.
  • For the first time, the UB is testing the acquisition model P(atron) D(riven) A(cquisition) (PDA) in the context of acquiring and licensing EBSCO e-books.

2013

  • Since October, functional extensions and improvements to the catalogue as well as extensions to the content of Primo Central have been published in a catalogue blog.
  • Since the beginning of the winter semester 2013/2014, 708 lockers have been available to users in a newly created locker area in the entrance area of the UB for the storage of wardrobe, bags and the like.
  • In the summer, the UB receives the first major expansion (1,320 sqm HNF) of the library building opened in spring 1977 (once designed for approx. 8,000 students with approx. 7,120 sqm main usable space) by providing space in Building J. The space expansion enables the UB to offer a wide range of services, such as the provision of a new library, a new library, and a new library. Among other things, the expansion of the space will allow for the creation of 45 additional workstations, an increase in shelf space for the books and journals of the departments of art, music and media studies, the institution of new office space (which will lead to the conversion of previous office space into user areas) as well as the provision of extensive space for the university archive, which is integrated into the UB.
  • In March, the 'new' catalogue, previously in use as a beta version, will become the new central research tool for the information media provided by the UB. The catalogue, based on search engine technology, offers a modern, intuitive user interface, optimal use also on mobile devices. The 'old' catalogue (Aleph) will continue to be made available.

2012

  • In autumn, the university, founded on 1 August 1972 as a comprehensive university, celebrates its 40th anniversary. The UB is participating in the celebrations from 22 October to 4 November 2012 with, among other things, an exhibition entitled "WissensRäume der Paderborn University. Building for Teaching, Studying and Research", which was developed by the University Archive.
  • Just in time for the 40th anniversary of the University, the UB has digitised all printed staff and lecture directories of the Comprehensive University / Paderborn University from the winter semester 1972/1973 to the winter semester 2006/2007 as well as the corresponding directories of the predecessor institutions (Pädagogische Hochschule Westfalen-Lippe, Fachhochschule Südost-Westfalen, Pädagogische Akademie). All directories are available as full-text searchable PDF files for worldwide use on the internet via the Digital Collections of the UB; in addition, the digital copies are listed in the library's catalogue.
  • In September, the UB will make the beta test version of a new catalogue available. The basis is the product Primo by the company Ex Libris, a software system based on search engine technology with which all kinds of information media can be searched and found in a modern way, independent of format and location. The system uses its own catalogue frontend.
  • In April, the web portal 'Digital Collections of Paderborn University Library' is launched. It is the joint research and presentation portal for the open access publications published via the publication service and the books and journals retro-digitised by the UB. The web portal is the visible part of the new publication and digitisation infrastructure of the UB (technical basis scantoweb hosted by hbz with the digitisation software Visual Libray of the companies semantics Kommunikationsmanagement GmbH and Walter Nagel GmbH & Co. KG). The UB prefers to retro-digitise copyright-free titles from its own holdings and those of cooperation partners. This year, the retro-digitisation of titles relevant to the history of the university is a focus of the library's activities.

2011

  • The computer science branch library in Fürstenallee will be closed on 15 December 2011. The closure of the branch library, which was built in 1994 and is the only UB location not on the Warburger Straße campus, is at the request of the Heinz Nixdorf Institute and the decision of the university presidium based on this.
  • On 06.10.2011, the UB introduces a 'break disc system' to regulate the dramatic need for workstations in the UB. Users must set a break disc and place it on the table when leaving a workstation. If no break disc is set out or the maximum break duration is exceeded, other users are allowed to take over the place.
  • In October, the UB presents its new 'Publication Service' as a platform for publishing electronic doctoral dissertations and other Open Access publications by members and institutions of the University. Technically, the publication service is a module of the Visual Library, originally developed for retro-digitisation projects, developed jointly by semantics and the UB Paderborn in close cooperation with the hbz. The new service replaces the MILESS/MyCore portal 'Document and Publication Service' (DuPS), which has been in use since 2007.

2010

  • In 2010, the UB is testing a new business model for e-books as part of the licensing of the Evidence Based selection of the publisher Elsevier. In the course of the year, the entire title portfolio is available, and at the end of the year, taking into account the usage statistics, a decision is made as to which titles will be permanently included in the university library's offer of electronic full texts.
  • In November, the open access stock of media studies is moved from the Art Library (Level 1) to Level 3, as the shelf space in the Art Library is completely exhausted and a further reduction of the limited number of user workstations there is unacceptable.
  • In October, the migration of the integrated library system Aleph from version 18.1 to version 20.02 takes place. In this context, "Google Books" will be integrated into the library catalogue in the full title display.
  • With Dr. Anikó Szabó, the University Archives will have a full-time director for the first time on 01.08.2010.
  • Since 7 June 2010, transaction numbers (TANs) are no longer required for interlibrary loan orders of books, excerpts from books and articles from journals, as interlibrary loan orders can now simply be settled via library account. With the introduction of the library account, the University Library is fulfilling a wish frequently expressed by users to be able to place interlibrary loan orders via the University Library from any Internet PC and from home without having to purchase a corresponding transaction number in advance at the library's cash desk.
  • Since 15.03.2010, the service eSeminarapparate[http://semapp.ub.uni-paderborn.de] has been provided in a revised version on a technically new platform, with a modern, up-to-date interface and some new functions.
  • Since summer semester 2010, the UB has offered eCopy as a new service. Self-service digital copies can be made on seven i2s supervisory scanners and stored on USB sticks free of charge until further notice. With this expansion of services, the UB is responding to students' repeated requests for an improvement in the copying situation in the library.

2009

  • On 12 October 2009, the University Archive is organisationally integrated into the University Library.
  • At the beginning of June, extensive construction and renovation work begins, which will continue into 2010. The existing data network and electrical installations will be expanded or renewed to meet the ever-increasing demands. In addition, the air-conditioning and ventilation system in the library will be overhauled and optimised in accordance with the increasing number of requests made to the library. This work is being carried out to make the library a more pleasant place to work and study for the users and staff of the library. As an environmental analysis by the Bau- und Liegenschaftsbetrieb NRW Bielefeld (NRW Building and Property Company) revealed that some of the building materials used in the construction of the University Library are classified as pollutants according to current findings, additional renovation work will be carried out to dispose of these building materials (e.g. mineral fibre insulation materials above the ceiling panels). For this purpose, individual fields of the UB are gradually sealed off dust-tight and thus made inaccessible for use. Even though everyone involved in the work is making every effort and the UB will only be closed for the construction and renovation work from Friday, 28 August, 12 noon to Monday, 31 August 2009, 12 noon, the disruptions and restrictions on the use of the UB are, unfortunately, considerable.

2008

  • From December onwards, the Document and Publication Service (DuPS) can be used to publish not only electronic doctoral dissertations, but in principle all academic papers produced at the University as well as other documents relevant to the University in the sense of 'Open Access', provided this does not contradict the applicable copyright law.
  • Completion of the redesign measures on Level 2 in November. The intended goal of optimising the functionality of the services to be provided in this field as well as the appearance of the UB was achieved. Among other things, the entire level was equipped with a new floor/carpet. The staff workrooms and the first aid room were redesigned and better adapted to functional requirements. The arrangement and distribution of the bookshelves, PC user workstations and photocopiers were redesigned, and the information desk of the specialist library was relocated and redesigned. The PC workstations in the specialist library were equipped with new PCs and new furniture.
  • From October onwards, a new automatic pay station makes it possible to pay accrued library fees in cash or, in the case of fees of 5 euros or more, with an EC card during the entire opening hours of the UB. Until now, the payment of fees was tied to the so-called checkout hours of the UB. If outstanding fees cause a block on the library account, this block is automatically lifted immediately after payment of the fees at the pay machine.
  • At the end of June, the University's three-year eLearning project Locomotion (Low-Cost Multimedia Organisation and Production) comes to an end, in which the UB has successfully participated, in particular with the development and expansion of e-seminar apparatuses and an institutional repository in the sense of Open Access.
  • In April, release of a web service that doctoral candidates at the University can use to post their electronic dissertations themselves via the Document and Publication Service (DuPS). This new option replaces the previous procedure, which has existed for about 10 years, according to which doctoral candidates delivered dissertations to be published in electronic form on CD-ROM. DuPS has an OAI interface that immensely improves the worldwide search options and thus the reading and use of the documents compared to the previous options. The approximately 400 doctoral dissertations previously made available by the UB via its web pages have been integrated into DuPS.
  • In March, the migration of the integrated library system Aleph from version 16.02 to version 18.1 takes place.

2007

  • In October, the UB opens the portal "Document and Publication Service" (DuPS), a new service of the University Library to support research, teaching and studies at Paderborn University. The new service is a further development of the portal for "Electronic Seminar Apparatus (eSeminar Apparatus)", which the UB has been offering since the winter semester 2006/07. Initially, the University's electronic doctoral dissertations will be made available via DuPS.
  • The first doctoral dissertations of the University were published in electronic form via the Paderborn University Library in 1997. Supported by the initiative of the UB, the doctoral regulations of the individual faculties have since been successively changed to the effect that, in addition to conventional publishing, only publication in electronic form - and no publication in dissertation print, microform or similar - is permitted. - is permitted. As of 2007, for the first time, not a single doctoral dissertation will be published in dissertation print, microform or similar.
  • Building measures in the UB: from the lecture-free period in summer, various building maintenance measures will be carried out on level 2. The workrooms of the UB staff will be redesigned and the walls repainted. In the Humanities Library, the previous PC reading room will be demolished. The walls will also be repainted, and the arrangement and distribution of the bookshelves, PC user workstations and copiers will be redesigned.
  • From July onwards, new acquisitions lists in the catalogue will offer the possibility of finding out about newly acquired books in the library, also on a subject-oriented basis.
  • From June onwards, the UB will make it possible to efficiently and conveniently go from literature research to full text by licensing the software SFX, a context-sensitive linking system from the company Ex Libris, which links the bibliographic record in databases with the library's electronic and printed holdings, thus making time-consuming follow-up research unnecessary. SFX replaces the availability query, which has been implemented in many databases of the UB Paderborn for more than two years.
  • On 01.06.2007 the library extended its opening hours on weekends from the previous Saturdays 9.00 - 18.00 and Sundays 10.00 - 18.00 to Saturdays and Sundays from 9.00 to 21.00 each. This means that the UB is now open for almost 107 hours per week.

2006

  • Introduction of electronic seminar apparatus ("eSeminar apparatus") to support teaching at Paderborn University. The new service is part of the activities of the UB within the framework of the BMBF project "Locomotion" at Paderborn University.
  • Introduction of online reference ("Chatting with the library")
  • Introduction of self-booking of books. Users of the library can check in and check out books independently via two self-check-in terminals set up in the field of local lending. The service applies to all books available for loan in the subject libraries.
  • Construction work in the Departmental Library of Economics and Social Sciences (Level 5): In the field of the reading room of the individual workstations, the windows and the sun protection are being renewed.
  • The UB changes to version 16.02 of the integrated local system Aleph 500. In the course of updating the library software, the catalogue is completely revised.
  • The "subject classification system for books" (arrangement system) is integrated into the catalogue. The search in the subject classification books offers an additional thematic search entry point.
  • The library receives a new usage regulation, which replaces the corresponding regulations of the administration and usage regulation for the library of the Paderborn University of November 12, 1991.
  • Introduction of a joint student and library card at Paderborn University: Students no longer have to apply for a library card at the UB. The new student card in cheque card format and with photo is also a semester ticket and library card.

2005

  • The UB receives new administrative regulations, which replace the corresponding regulations of the administrative and user regulations for the library of the Paderborn University of Applied Sciences of 12.11.1991.
  • The specialist library for economics and social sciences (level 5) is redesigned. A new entrance is created between the corridor and the group study room, and the book and journal holdings are arranged according to a new concept.
  • In all subject libraries, the stock of chairs that has "grown" over the decades is completely replaced with uniform chairs made of light wood to improve the working atmosphere.
  • The UB is participating in the BMBF project "Locomotion" at Paderborn University (2006-2008) as part of sub-project 3: Knowledge Organisation and here in the development of the service units Integrated Knowledge Organisation.
  • The library of natural sciences is being renovated in the field of sports literature, scientific journals and the group study room (C1) in order to be able to offer users a more attractive and pleasant room design than before.

2004

  • Together with the ULB Düsseldorf, the UB Paderborn initiates the project "Catalogue Enrichment", which aims at cooperatively scanning tables of contents of books in libraries, linking the tables of contents as pdf-file with the title records in the catalogue and furthermore integrating the indexed terms in the tables of contents into the catalogue research.
In 2005, the preparations together with the companies Ex Libris and Imageware lead to a joint project under the auspices of the University Library Centre (hbz), generously supported financially by the Ministry for Innovation, Science and Research of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia (MIWFT). The University and State Library of Cologne and the Central Library of Medicine in Cologne, which can be won over as pilot libraries, begin scanning activities. In 2006, work starts at the University and State Library of Düsseldorf and the Paderborn University Library, and in 2008, the Duisburg-Essen University Library and the Trier University Library join in.
